SQUARES
The design begins with stacking wooden pieces, akin to playing with blocks or erecting a structure. This process of aggregation—from individual blocks to a solid form—gives rise to a chair. What starts as a basic shape evolves into a full series, creating a cohesive and sturdy collection. This approach is rooted in memory. Designer‘s father, who worked for a construction company, built several small houses for our family. I often joined him, learning to lay bricks—ensuring each wall was perfectly plumb, each brick snug against its neighbor, each layer bound by mortar. This ritual, repeated countless times, forged a core belief: objects are vessels of memory. In keeping with this philosophy, every piece in the series is defined by simplicity and rigor. Take the chair: it is reduced to its essence—four legs, a seat, and a back. Composed of squares, it stands firmly on the ground, projecting strength, stability, and elegance. This marks a stark departure from my previous work, a transformation we see as a direct result of the discipline and restraint cultivated through years of independent living. Our goal was a chair that can fade into the background or command attention. Beneath its austere exterior, the collection surprises with luminous finishes and bold colors, introducing a note of playful whimsy. The design process mirrored childhood block-building: starting from chaos and moving toward order through a relentless search for harmony. We exercised extreme restraint, strictly planning every dimension as a multiple of a 5x5cm square. The wooden construction features subtly convex surfaces on every block, which catch the light to create shimmering highlights, enhancing the vibrant colors or finishes. The series currently comprises dining chairs, bar stools, dining tables, benches, stool, and mirrors, available in a variety of colors. We plan to expand this family in the future, exploring the endless possibilities of the squares.
